Delivering Value: Aligning KPIs and Quality for Real Impact

In our first two conversations with Mike Barrett, Director of Sales and Delivery at Catalyx, we explored how Catalyx builds trusted partnerships with pharmaceutical clients and develops on-site teams that thrive in highly regulated GMP environments.

Once those partnerships and teams are established, the next question naturally follows. How do you ensure that all this effort translates into measurable, meaningful value?

In this third instalment of our Ask the Expert series, Mike explains how Catalyx keeps delivery tightly aligned with client KPIs, ensuring that every action drives tangible, data-backed outcomes. From establishing robust review cadences and shared performance metrics to addressing real-world challenges such as compliance transformation and cost-effective quality management, Mike shows how measurable results are not just tracked but embedded into daily operations.

Let’s dive in.

How do you align delivery with KPIs and ensure measurable results for pharma and life sciences clients?

With every pharma or life sciences client, the first step is to establish a clear and consistent performance review cadence. This includes Annual Business Reviews, Quarterly and Monthly Reviews, and daily Managing for Daily Improvement meetings, where key performance indicators are reviewed and discussed in real time.

We view KPIs across two layers. The first layer focuses on site-level KPIs, such as product output, deviations closed, and batch records reviewed. These ensure our teams are aligned with the client’s operational priorities. The second layer consists of Catalyx KPIs, which we track through our monthly, quarterly, and annual reviews.

Alignment is critical. We never measure our performance in isolation. Instead, we directly link our KPIs to the client’s site metrics so both teams move forward together. This approach allows us to clearly demonstrate measurable outcomes, including efficiency gains, productivity improvements, and enhanced quality, while giving clients confidence that we are delivering on our commitments.

What real-world challenges have Catalyx teams helped clients overcome?

One strong example comes from a pharmaceutical manufacturing site experiencing significant compliance challenges. Working closely with the on-site team and the wider Catalyx compliance experts, we assessed the situation and agreed that the most effective solution was to introduce a dedicated compliance specialist.

This specialist took a holistic approach, focusing not only on resolving individual issues but on strengthening compliance across the entire organization. The work began with GMP-focused onboarding, ensuring every new hire had a solid understanding of Good Manufacturing Practice from day one.

From there, the emphasis shifted to daily support and coaching, helping teams see compliance as a way of working rather than a box-ticking exercise. Initially, the improvements were subtle, with fewer deviations and fewer stop meetings. Over time, however, a deeper cultural shift emerged. Compliance became a shared mindset rather than a procedural obligation.

The result was a successful transformation that rebuilt confidence, reinforced quality, and demonstrated how the right expertise and partnership can create sustainable change.

How do you balance cost-effectiveness with maintaining high-quality, compliant outcomes?

The starting point is clear. Quality outcomes are non-negotiable. There can be no compromise when it comes to GMP compliance or delivery standards. The real question is how to achieve those outcomes in the most cost-effective way.

For us, that begins with placing the right people in the right roles at the right time, and then investing in their continuous development. It is about taking people on a career journey through training, mentoring, and coaching so they can grow into new responsibilities.

This approach is far more cost-effective than relying on repeated hiring of expensive external contractors. While there are situations that require highly specialized expertise, and we can support that when needed, our priority is building long-term in-house capability wherever possible.

By creating an environment where people want to stay, we reduce turnover, strengthen loyalty, and maintain continuity for both Catalyx and our clients. That stability drives cost efficiency and consistent performance, while ensuring quality and compliance remain front and center.

The Result: Measurable Value Through Alignment and Partnership

As Mike highlights, measurable value is not just about hitting KPI targets. It is about creating alignment, consistency, and accountability that benefits both Catalyx teams and client operations.

When KPIs, compliance, and cost-effectiveness move together, the results are clear. Stronger performance, sustained quality, and genuine long-term partnerships.

Through its Professional and Managed Services model, Catalyx delivers measurable value across pharma and life sciences by aligning people, processes, and performance to drive operational excellence in every engagement.
